Title: Two wires coming together via electromagnetic attraction
Post by: DanD.1 on September 22, 2018, 04:22:18 PM
Hello, I have a very limited amount of knowledge regarding basic electromagnets. I was thinking of bringing two tips of wires together using an electromagnetic attraction between them (I attached a picture of what I am talking about). I was wondering if this is possible? I would appreciate some feedback regarding this.

My hope is: Your question was already answered.
If not:

Is it possible as shown in your picture? Nope, no way.

Why?

You need flowing current to generate an electromagnetic field.
Therefor you need a closed electric circuit.

Other options?

Yes. You need two parallel wires in wich the current flows in the same direction.
Each wire builds it own electromagnetic field. (Look: "Right-Hand-Rule" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-hand_rule#Amp%C3%A8re's_right-hand_grip_rule).)

The effect is visible here (https://youtu.be/GW7PvSR9VUo).
