Shoot, i paid R39 for mine from HIFiCorp.............. Does what is says on the tin, and cuts well enough. 5 minutes to do the trim to #2 and away I go and wash to get rid of all those tiny little hairs.

I have a Philips one and the manual says you can use it while plugged in only when the battery is fully discharged. It has to do with the rudimentary charge circuit.

Martin, as you were wondering about powering the hair cutter directly from the 'charger': just for curiosity I had a look at the comments from Amazon reviews for that item and one not-so-happy buyer reported:

The base stand is just extra plastic. You can plug the cord directly into the back of the clippers and throw away the stand.

The charger/wallwart/powersupply is just a very simple switcher, with primary side feedback and regulation. Quite likely to be rather poor with load, and can give a varying output with load.

As to the clippers, the charger is a simple current limit, and charges the cells at a current that will fully charge then in around 3 hours, then cook them afterwards. With the new 2200mAh cells you want to charge at a lower current, so replace the 33R resistor with a 68R to 120R 1W unit, and then the cells will take between 8-12 hours to fully charge. NimH cells do not like overcharge, so charging to less than full will do no harm, unlike overcharge which will shorten life considerably. then you can use the original charger, or use another that gives between 6-8VDC at 300ma or so in place of it. Old Nokia charger will do, it gives normally 6V.

Hello!

I like this 'take a look inside' series. The last one was great too. In today's consumer society I consider that people need to be educated since there's a lot of poorly designed merchandise on the market. The reason's simple: they have to be cheap and anyway we're taught to throw away what goes wrong, not bother with repairs and buy new stuff. With just a little knowledge/intel/heads-up they could last much longer and these types of videos prove that statement; in this case it was only a matter of changing the batteries and you're back in business.

So, Martin, I'm afraid that you are actually doing a favor to our society. :) In my opinion these are the things that the Internet should be used to. If it wasn't like this, how on earth would I ever met you, having ~15000 km away? :)

OK, maybe I got a little carried away, but I guess you get the picture. There are many good electricians and experts on this forum who can help with info about the hair clipper's circuit, so I thought that I'll just throw in something from another perspective. I'm hoping that many will be interested in your videos and benefit from them. I certainly will/am.

Thank you!

Hi Martin,

On that wall-wart that is outputting 8V instead of 3V,

1) What is the part number of U1?  Sometimes the datasheet has a "typical application circuit/diagram" that helps you figure out how the circuit works.

2) It is possible that a bad cap is responsible for the high 8V DC output?

I have fixed two ATX SMPS power supplies that had high DC voltage rails.  One had a 11V DC on the 5V standby rail.  The other is documented below. Both had a single bad capacitor that were not obviously bulged.

See

http://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22171

3) With so few components on the wall-wart, it is easy to test/measure them all to see if any are bad.

Once you fix a couple of things, you realize how much you learn.

Aaah...thanks for the feedback...the stand actually works ok for me...and watch part 2 (uploading as I type this) as I can still work cordless...

Cheers,
Martin.

Very handy feedback as always...watch part 2 and let me know if the "simple solution" should work..

Hi Martin,

Once you fix a couple of things, you realize how much you learn.

Hello Retiredcaps,

Thanks for the post..and for the inspiration to even consider opening up bits like this and taking a look inside.

Watch part 2...a bit more is revealed about the wall-wart...and I think a simple solution at the end of the day. I did not really get time to test the solution as time was getting tight but I will monitor the results on the next recharge of the trimmer.

I hope to post some pictures now while the video is uploading.

Cheers,
Martin.

BTW, am I on Santa's naughty list if I laughed out loud, several times, at 32:14, and then repeatedly played that little clip over and over?   ;D

You can't script that reaction and nervous laugh.  ;)

:) ....yes...in college my fellow class mates knew I was a little 'jumpy' when I was near live circuits and would take great delight coming up behind me in practical classes and clapping their hands...

You would never have survived my class..... We made a chair with a bite, and I used to sit in it as the dummy. Not to say anything about the powered urinal..............
