Back online...
« on: May 28, 2013, 12:05:07 PM »
Hello Everyone!

We arrived safely in the US just over a week ago and have settled in very quickly...and very happy to be back here.

My lab is starting to take shape...loads of boxs from Amazon arriving...

I have some video when the lab was bare bones...but I'm waiting on a monitor for my editing PC before I can get videos up....this laptop does not have enough horses to edit AVCHD.

My editing PC was not packaged for airfreight correctly and had signs of cosmetic damage....so I hope it fires up ok once I have the monitor...

There are loads of communications I've not been able to deal with over the last 4 weeks and I'll do my best to get though as much as I can before I start filming at the end of this week.

Thanks again for all the good wishes!

Pics attached...getting the last bits stuffed into the container before we left...

Cheers,
Martin.

Welcome to the U.S.A.!  Glad that you arrived safely.  I'm new to this board and have actually just recently discovered your YouTube channel and am catching up.  I'm on #3 of the DC Load series.  Very informative.  Thank you for taking the time to explain everything so thoroughly.

I am very glad that things went well. I moved from Canada to Chile so I went from the land of cheap prices and good service to the land of you take what you are given and are happy to pay whatever price is asked. ::)

Have fun and don't turn into a Republican!

Thanks everyone! I've taken enough time to setup now and should have the first video of the new lab and what's coming for review on Friday sometime.

If it is possible Martin, can you tell us what equipment you use for the making of your videos ? I am asking this because your videos are qualitative very good: sound + light + video. If i watch other vids of other users; or you can't barely hear them or it is dark,...

Are you using an extrern microphone ? If yes, wich one ? And where it is placed ?
And the light ? What are you using ?
And, if you recording, are you using the mem. card of the cam ? Or do you capture on a computer ?
Are you using a ext. screen to see yourself and the products ? or just the screen of the cam ?

Thanks.

Aaah...good question...I'll give you a walk around the lab and show what I'm doing for lighting and sound...still playing with it a little but you should get an idea when I post a T4D tomorrow.

Many thanks for showing the lab, camcorder and microphone and lighting. I read the comments on YouTube. Some of them have problems with the lights. Yes, maybe they are right. For me, is ok, i am not picky.
But, you are busy on a professional way, and that makes the difference.

Lighting for the camera close ups you need a ring light, it fits around the camera lens and gives a nice even light with no badger eyes and a lovely reflection off your eyes.  Add a diffuser for the stage lights, and add a set of curtains in addition to the blinds, the soft curtains will damp the reverb in the room. Add a simple duvet on the back of the door and another on the wall behind your camera as extra sound absorption (just buy the inners and use them) and you will find the room is a lot quieter and acoustically deader for a low cost. If loathe to make holes for screws in the walls just buy a set of light stands and add a cross bar to hold the duvet inners. Buy a second set of stands and another cross bar of square section aluminium tubing and mount over the bench to hold the overhead camera rig, cable tie to the existing bench if needed. Colour balance the camera, get a set of 18% and 80% grey cards off Amazon and use them to white balance the camera so you get a consistent colour temperature in production,  Place one on the bench background so you always have a reference set.

Aaah...and I thought that little twinkle in my eye made me look happy ;P

Thanks, great advice...working on the lighting and will follow up on the sound once I've completed a few more videos to make judgement call.
