Hi Martin,

After you get settled in Cleveland, Ohio, open up a RMA case with Fluke since the Fluke 287 has lifetime warranty and send the 287 to their HQ for repair with a note explaining the problem.  You might get "lucky" and get a 289 in return?

PS. Get in touch with Chris Gammell and see if you can be a "guest" on theamphour.com with him and Dave Jones.

Hello Retiredcaps,

Good idea....but I don't think Fluke will appreciate receiving my 287 since modified (hacked)  to run off solar power and hybrid capacitors!!! ;)

Chris did reach out to me and I have said I will certainly meet him for a drink once settled in Cleveland....seems like a good gent.

Cheers,
Martin.

You never know until you try the RMA process.  All it will cost you is the price of postage (with tracking number).  It is like asking a girl to dance at the high school prom.

They may not flinch at the modifications and perhaps due a firmware upgrade regardless?  This assumes there is a firmware upgrade to fix the problem for the 287.

I have read many war stories of abused Flukes being sent back and people getting new ones or repairs for free under the lifetime warranty.

edit: When you are in the USA, use an insured/tracking option so that if the Fluke 287 gets lost of damaged, you are covered.

Yup...good point. I will certainly consider this when we're back in the US.

I checked the Fluke site this last week and both the 287 and 289 seem to share the same firmware currently at v1.10 on the site....but new 289's seem to be supplied with a later version not yet available for download...
