New Person Seeks Knowledge
« on: September 04, 2014, 08:00:22 AM »
I've been learning about electricity from the youtube. I just got an extech 330 for $38.04. This my 1st "electronics" purchase. I think I'm going with flush cutters and a temperature controlled soldering iron next. I would like to build a lab similar to what was summarized on that EEVblog #168. My goals are to reduce my electric bill and be able to maintain/repair my electronic things (vehicle, appliances, etc). On here, I'm hoping to find out the best sequence to shop for the items listed on EEVblog #168. Have a great day :)

Welcome,

To start, make sure you have a firm understanding of the fundamentals of electronics and electricity. Be aware of the potential dangers and hazards of electrical and electronics repair and troubleshooting. With that said, the best place to start would be eBay and/or Amazon. You can find most of the basic tools you would require here and at a reasonable cost. Once you advance to more complex repairs and designs you could start to look at specialty test equipment companies such as TEquipment, Davis Instruments, TestEquity, Test Equipment Depot and etc.

Hello and welcome, you're in the same situation as me, which is just getting started. Like TechJunkie said a good place to start with is fundamentals, I purchaced the book "Getting started in Electronics" and so far what I've read has been great. There are some good soldering kits on amazon you could try as well. Good luck.
