« on: May 25, 2014, 03:18:59 PM »
It's my 60th Birthday at the end of the week, my family actually bought me something I want for a change,
a DSO, not an expensive one ,however I feel it with do me well in my hobby, the model I've gone for is a Siglent SDS 1102 CNL, they seem to fit the bill for my needs I guess the letters on the end mean something there was DL  and the one I bought CNL, anyway looking forward to playing with it.

That's Great! Is this your first scope? I started years ago with a used Analog Hitachi 20Mhz dual channel, then traded it and found a used (Like New) Tektronix 100MHz 4 Channel which I had for years and still do. Sometime after that I bought my first DSO and I loved it. I still keep a couple analog scopes around because they can still be useful. I hope you have many years of enjoyment from it!

Hi Eric , It is my first DSO, I've had my analogue scope for about 15 years it's only a 10 Mhz Telequipment D61A, so this 100Mhz digital scope will be quite a difference for me, and I should think some serious getting used to time. Not that I'm complaining. ::)

The DSO will open up a whole new world for you. Detecting and analyzing glitches will be far easier on the DSO. The ability to capture and save a waveform is great. I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Wow I just love this scope, having to relearn how to use a scope but the features, are unbelievable, one of the features is something called FFT, something about it been a spectrum analyser, feature!! tried it out on some filters i have  :), also it captured this image of a fast edged pulse generator I made from Alan's W2AEW circuit, and it caught the ringing which my dear old 10MHz analogue couldn't, the analog scope is now fully employed with my Wobbulator, which i'm using for linning up some I F stages on a radio.

Now I've had this wonderful scope a week , the more I'm getting into it, I'm learning something NEW about it everytime I switch it on. I got siglent the English software, and English manual all 135 pages of it, via Siglent's technical engineer called Jade, who was really helpful the manual, seeing the scope on a 21 inch monitor, is also mind blowing which, again  it's impossible to take in at one sitting. So today I'm going to try and understand the FFT a bit more and to do this I've made up a filter circuit using a TOKO coil, and I'll see what I can learn today with it. ;).

FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) is a great measurement tool. It's used in many applications including the audio field. It basically converts time and/or space into frequency. It's a very fast algorithm which is useful in time/frequency and frequency/time analysis. Most decent digital scopes have this feature which is a great alternative to a full spectrum analyzer. Since it is a software based operation, it needs a fair bit of processor power to handle a wide range of frequency analysis. I have a handheld portable Siglent scope and it seems to work really well! I think you'll have years of fun and learning with it.

Hi Eric, Still just playing with it,I'm Hoping the FFT ,will allow me to see the response of some filters, for a receiver I've been building. these days I prefer to build my amateur radio equipment rather than buy it,It's funny how it works out, when I first got licensed I had no skill and no money, and it took ages to buy anything, now I have some skills, and got the money to buy amateur radio equipment , I'd much rather build it, life's a strange beast.
