New Metrix Multimeter? MTX 3293?
« on: February 09, 2015, 01:26:24 AM »
I really enjoyed Martin's review of the Metrix MTX 328(1,2,3) multimeter and was looking at a possible purchase when I discovered that there seems to be a relatively new product called the MTX 3293.  It also seems to know as the ASYC IV.  (Chauvin-Arnoux)

I would like to know more about this unit and how it compares to the "clamshell" 3283 models.  The specs seem to indicate that it is a possible upgrade.  I would love to see Martin do a video comparing the units.

Lastly, it does not seem to be available in the USA, yet.  (I hope)   :)

I brought this to Martin's attention back in Oct 2014 and I know Martin is keenly interested in it, but it hasn't come up for sale yet in the normal distribution channels the last time I checked?

edit: According to

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/digital-multimeters/8216846/

It is on backorder until March 25, 2015 at least for RS in Europe and yes I know Martin is in the USA.

I'm sorry I missed your post retiredcaps, I really did try to look.   :-[

Yes, it does seem they are hard to come by in most anywhere.  Let's hope it due to a rush of demand vs production limitations.

I'm very keen to get my hands on it...will see what I can do.

I think this new format without the clamshell will be better. However...unless I missed something in the spec it does not measure both current and voltage at the same time for power measurements. I really like that feature in the 3282 model as it's so rare in meters.
Play, discover, learn and enjoy! (and don't be scared to make mistakes along the way!)

Martin, i guess not being a clamshell will have more universal appeal. I also understand the vulnerability of falling on the open hinge is a risk. But honestly there was some satisfaction in how the clamshell protected the screen and kept dust out of the "keyboard" wile not being used.  I'll live with either.

I do hope the screen resolution and it's update technique are improved.

Retiredcaps, thanks for digging that out of the manual!

Just thought I'd bump this topic and check on status of a review of this multimeter.
Thank you,

Martin talks about it briefly at the end of Extech GX900 vs Fluke 287 Graphical Multimeter Review - Pt2 video at 34:52.

I'm using an MTX 3293. Things I love about it:
* Accuracy and resolution: both lab grade. Chauvin Arnoux really do know about meterology.
* VxA which is fantastic for measuring power consumption - particularly for ultra low power mode on micros etc.
* 11A fuse only (no blowing the small one) and the burden voltage is really low.
* Can be plugged into the mains charging the batteries and be used at the same time.
* 'Spec Mode': Shows the reading and the uncertainty limits simultaneously.
* Display: three lines of 100,000 counts.
