What is the voltage rating of those big caps on the primary side. If they are 400V then there is no reason why this cannot be used direct on 220VAC. Not a bad supply, just simple and with poor regulation........

Funny thing happened this morning........

Come to work and the boss asks me to look at his shaver. Interesting, did not know Panasonic made shavers. 20 years old, with a wall wart to charge it. Took a half hour to dismantle it enough to get to the batteries inside, 2 Panasonic NimH near AA cells, but with a very unusual connection scheme.

Interesting driver as well, not an electric motor driving an eccentric cam, but a proper linear motor with restoring spring assemblies on each side made from stainless steel spring plates. Fault is the original cells are very dead, gave them a quick brute force charge and they did recover a little, went from 1v to 1V2 and were then able to run the charger. I think I will take the camera into work tomorrow, along with the UT81B and have a quick look to see the waveform across this motor, and to see if it will charge new cells properly.

I do think photos will come sometime soon........

How bizarre! Good to see the pics if you can get them up....great to hear the UT81B is being put to work too.

The pics and the video are here.

Interesting shaver, though unfortunately the leaking battery has eaten through the traces on the board such that the charge side no longer works, though the inverter works well with the use of some charged cells to provide power. Plugging in the charger results in a discharge of 17mA from the cells instead of the expected 300mA charge. Interesting is the charger is similar to the one Martin has in his shaver, even though I did not think to take pictures of it. It provides 6V at 300mA to charge the cells, using a switcher that has primary side regulation and a good set of capacitors on the secondary along with some filtering.
